Marriage Counselling Relationship Counselling: East Grinstead, Sussex.

Eleos counselling offers marriage counselling, relationship counselling to couples in the East Grinstead West Sussex area.

Certainly, a couple’s therapist or marriage counsellor will not have some magical technique which will re-establish a relationship that is broken beyond repair. Nevertheless, Eleos Counselling has had considerable success using a form of therapy named Emotionally Focused Therapy or EFT.

Unlike, most couples therapy methods, which are based on communication skills, Emotionally Focused Therapy or EFT centres on the relationship and the interaction the couple have, looking at both negative and positive cycles of interaction.

Based on extensive studies involving couples, Emotionally Focused Therapy or EFT proposes to a couple, which is experiencing difficulty in their relationship, a well-defined and research-based method, of couples/marriage counselling/therapy.

By working on what is called attachment needs,  a couple can come to have a better appreciation into each other’s expectations and desires within the relationship, and this can help them create new ways of relating to each other. Based on their individual attachment needs.

Research carried out by Dr Sue Johnston the author of the EFT, suggests that when couples turn to EFT, ninety percent of them report substantial improvements in their relationship. Between seventy percent to seventy-five percent of couples who are having difficulties in their relationship can move forward using EFT. Primarily, EFT helps a couple understand each other’s way of relating. Furthermore, it helps the couple find ways for these to be met, within their relationship, in a healthy and productive way.

When should we go to couples therapy?

Unfortunately far too many couples come to couples therapy when their relationship is in tatters. Most couples therapist would suggest that a couple comes to therapy as soon as they are having problems, which they feel they cannot resolve.

It’s a sad fact that many couple’s therapists will see a couple when their relationship has got to the point where one of the couples is about to leave the relationship. Furthermore, a couples therapist will often see a couple when their relationship has become verbally, and in extreme cases physically abusive and or hurtful;  rescuing a relationship at this point can be very tricky.

Does marriage counselling /couples therapy work?

In reality, the question above should be will both you and your partner engage in couples therapy? The truth is that effective couples therapy depends on both the couple wanting to engage in the process. Often the fact that both couples want to come to couples therapy shows that they are both committed to the relationship and want help with their relationship. Often, if one of the couples is reluctant or unwilling to go to therapy then maybe now is not the right time. An alternative to couples therapy is you come to individual therapy so that you can work on yourself to change your position within the relationship and the way you react in that relationship.

How many sessions do you think we will need?

As mentioned above, the model that Eleos counselling uses is emotionally focused therapy or EFT. Research carried out into this model suggests that 12 sessions are usually enough to help the couple change the cycle of negative interaction.

However, anecdotal evidence supports that things can be done very much quicker should both parties be in agreement, that they want to work on their relationship.

Eleos counselling has written a blog about the true cost of Couples therapy /marriage counselling, both emotionally and financially: there is a link in the link box at the bottom of this page.

We came to couples counselling after I had a fling with a a person at work. I was racked with guilt and told David. I thought our relationship was over. In fact, I had left our home and moved into a room at my sister’s house.

David had seen Eleos Counselling advertised on Google. I was willing to try anything to save our marriage, Together, We came to therapy I’m so glad we did. We are working on our relationship, and now I’ve moved back into our home.
